Redwood Logging in California, 1940’s

The history of the Northwest and California is all about trees. Gold ore was what they chased in 1849, but trees were the real gold. Entire cities were built from swaths of the forests. And some of the greatest giants the world has ever known were felled to build our country. As this newsreel states: “All of the world’s history since Christ was born could have occurred, perhaps, in the life of one of these redwoods…. When the axes, the wedges, and the saws bring it down, the wood will last many, many years.” I believe that progress is good, and development of our civilization is natural. But it should follow a thoughtful plan, and we should be careful not to squander our resources, or we will have nothing left for future generations.
